Timothy Kreider, MD, PhD
Part of psychiatry’s attraction to me has always been its rapid growth: ever greater scientific understanding, expanding evidence base, evolving care systems. To lead such a dynamic field, APA needs a membership base that represents the diversity of psychiatry, now and for the future. My vision is for APA to be an even more valuable community for MIT, ECP, and MUR members, thus ensuring that APA and psychiatry continue to thrive in our changing healthcare environment.
We need the value of APA membership to be readily apparent to young psychiatrists, which in turn requires effective bi-directional communication. Recent MIT leaders improved APA’s social media presence and increased forums like town halls. I would continue such efforts. I would harness APA leadership to encourage networking at district branch and local levels. Too often, MITs lapse their membership at end of training, perhaps because APA’s value seems too costly or abstract. If APA can help residents find not just tangible benefit but also a sense of belonging in a local APA community, then hopefully they will remain members after graduation. A guiding principle for me is that APA should be a home for all psychiatrists, throughout their careers, and I hope to help make that a reality if elected to the board.

I am honored to be nominated to serve as your MIT Trustee-Elect. Thank you for your consideration!
My goals for enhancing MIT involvement and community include:
- Development of APA member database to better facilitate networking between residents and established psychiatrists – When exploring career options or new locations, residents should have no trouble connecting with APA members practicing in diverse settings and communities.
- Support from APA for psychiatrists to offer residents exposure to their private or community practice – Incentives could encourage APA members to open their offices to residents, thus enabling mentoring within local communities.
- Outreach to medical students matching in psychiatry – APA should actively engage future psychiatrists early, welcoming them to our profession and connecting them with local APA branches.
- Streamlined access to MIT resources and opportunities – Fellowships, grants, the Resident’s Journal, AJP Journal Club, and other great APA offerings should be easily searchable through an easy-to-use online portal.
